Ooms Bouwmaatschappij launched the first floating home in 1999. It was the company's very innovative response to the space problem in the Netherlands. Ooms Bouwmaatschappij also listened closely to the market, which was asking for other living options in view of the lack of space. The floating home offers an alternative to land-based residential and utility buildings and is a superb example of multiple use of space.

There are numerous places in which floating communities could be established, in both inner urban and outlying areas. Floating homes require a water depth of around 150 cm. All floating homes comply fully with the guidelines for sustainable construction and the Building Decree and have the following features:

  • unsinkable
  • stable
  • environmentally friendly
  • insulated
  • insurable
  • durable
  • safe

The Construction division is currently at the preparation stage of various projects for floating neighbourhoods in the Netherlands.
